You know Oscar Wilde*, Marty Wilde** and Kim Wilde***. Now meet Carlos Wilde.
It’s not often you associate any decent rock, blues or even credible pop music with the Iberian Peninsula, that part of western Europe encompassing Spain, Portugal, Andorra, Gibraltar and some of southern France. In all of my time listening to music I can think of only four Iberian pop music acts to make it internationally.
Madrid’s Los Bravos in 1966. The first Spanish group to hit Western pop charts
The first was the ‘beat’ band Los Bravos, a Spanish outfit from Madrid, who stormed the world’s charts in 1966 with ‘Black Is Black’, reaching number one in Canada, number two in Britain and number three in the USA singles chart, selling two million records alone in Spain. From memory they had a German singer who sounded like Gene Pitney. If you’re too young to remember Los Bravos, check the link to see if you agree and hear some historic pop.
The second Iberian to strike gold was Albert Hammond, a singer song-writer from Gibraltar, the tiny UK territory on the tip of the Iberian Peninsula. Part cliff-face town, part British garrison (much to Spain’s disgust), Gibraltar looks down upon and ‘guards’ the entrance from the Atlantic Ocean to the Mediterranean Sea, looking across to North Africa a few miles away. Hammond led a band there called the Diamond Boys.
In 1966, Albert Hammond and the leader of the Spanish band, Los Flaps, teamed up in the UK to form a group called The Family Dog. The ex-Los Flaps leader, incidentally, was an American called Steve Roland, whose great uncle was the Hollywood film mogul, Louis B. Mayer, no less. Steve went on to produce 13 UK top ten hits, produce the legendary Pretty Things and discover The Clash amongst other things.
Gibraltar’s Albert Hammond OBE, back in the day: when he was backed by Led Zeppelin and Elton John. Dad of the Strokes’ guitarist of the same name.
Albert Hammond and Roland formed the Family Dogg, a folk-rock group which had a number six hit in the UK in 1969 with their single, ‘Way of Life’, from the album of the same name. Session musicians on the record, recorded in April and May 1969, were Jimmy Page, John Paul Jones, John Bonham and Elton John. Page, Jones and Bonham had released their first album, ‘Led Zeppelin’, three months earlier while Elton John would release his debut album, ‘Empty Sky’ that July.
Albert Hammond then hit the big time in the USA in 1972 with his song, ‘It Never Rains in Southern California’, which reached number five in America’s pop singles chart. As it happens, I helped promote the track when working at CBS Records. We couldn’t have done a good job, though, because it only reached number 51 in Britain. Albert took off to Southern California, himself, soon afterwards; but not because of our woeful performance in the CBS press office, I hope.(I think we might have thought it a bit too MOR, at the time, to put our hearts into it.)
Southern California was the making of him, though, and Albert Hammond has since written a string of international hits including the classic, ‘The Air That I Breath’, for the Hollies in 1974. And as a sign of his success, Albert is now a proud holder of an OBE (Order of the British Empire). John Lennon, remember, sent his OBE back to Buckingham Palace as a protest about the Vietnam War. But why? The UK wasn’t even officially involved! #
Other songs co-written by Albert Hammond include the US number one ‘When I Need You’, a worldwide hit for Leo Sayer; and ‘To all the Girls I’ve Loved Before’, a monster international smash for Willie Nelson with Julio Iglesias in 1984. That old romantic Julio, my third Iberian success story, is the biggest success of them all. But, having sold over 300 million records, the Spaniard from Madrid hardly needs any promotion from me. Julio’s son, Enrique Iglesias, of course, is the fourth monster success from the Spanish neck of the woods. Billed as the Latin King of Pop, he’s sold 159 million records globally.
Albert Hammond’s son, Albert Hammond Jnr, incidentally, plays guitar and keyboards for the New York indie band, The Strokes. But, rather than Iberian, Junior seems as American as baseball and apple pie.

All of which brings me to the subject of today’s post, about another rare talent from the Iberian Peninsula, the Portuguese singer-songwriter, performer and pretty useful all-round rock guitarist who is Carlos Wilde.
We all know how trying to make it in the music business, for most people, is like bashing your head against a brick wall. I’ve lost count of the really talented musicians I’ve known who eventually gave a music career away. Well, Carlos Wilde is doing it on his own terms. He’s gone the band route, in Ireland. He’s paid his dues touring solo across Europe, performing live in Spain, France, Portugal, Ireland and Holland. Now he’s living in northern Spain, training English teachers and also working as a teacher, while composing and recording in his studio and gigging occasionally. And it’s not going too badly. His songs have been played by 122,600 people on ReverbNation, where Carlos Wilde has some 26,000 fans at the time of writing. So how does a European musician who started off performing Fado (a mournful Portuguese equivalent of America’s blues) at the age of six get such a rocking almost Aussie-rock feel to his music? His education helped, he says. “I grew up with American-Canadian tutorship back home and then lived in Dublin, Ireland, for many years.” It was in Dublin that he started writing his own stuff.
“That’s when bands came into the picture. We used to play regular spots in pubs, clubs, open air gigs: in quite reputable places like JJ Smyths, one of the most popular pub music venues in Ireland.” Irish readers will know JJ Smyths, with its origins stretching back to the 1730s, as ‘Dublin’s premier live jazz and blues venue’.
Today Carlos Wilde is more interested in music placement (licensing and publishing deals) than carving out a career as a rock performer.
Referring to his career as an English teacher, he says, “Today I don’t have the pressure of living off music
like I did in the past.”
I know of many singer-songwriters who do make a living off music who don’t rock like Carlos Wilde, sing like Carlos Wilde and write like Carlos Wilde. With a bit of luck and more recognition, Carlos Wilde could be the biggest thing to come out of Portugal since José Mourinho. Sorry, make that Ronaldo.

# UK in Vietnam.This is only hearsay, but many years ago I met an Australian army officer who had just done a stint in Vietnam during the Vietnam War. When I mentioned how the British weren’t involved, he told me ‘not officially’. The British SAS used to fly into Vietnam, he said, put on Australian army uniforms, and fight the Viet Cong in the guise of Aussies. This was to get some practice in. I’ve never heard or seen that mentioned since, and don’t whether it’s true or not. But that’s what the Australian told me.

I am so proud of Carlos,I have been listening to his music since the beginning of Indie music, when we discovered each other at Indiehangout, a place where musicians gathered, chatted and listened to some of the best music ever created. At the infancy of internet radio, as a DJ, I had the pleasure to playing his music, and he will tell you my favourite, “This side of paradise” a classic blues song that blew me away. Carlos Wilde is just one of those artist who seems to have the perfect compositions dedicated to the perfect lyric. His expertise in music has me continually telling myself when I hear his music, dang I wish I would’ve wrote that song. Carlos Wilde created an amazing sound track and video for my The Goopy Ghost at Christmas children’s story. This amazing artist created a catchy gift for children as well as the adults in their lives with his amazing composition, music, voice and images. He gave of his heart and soul. I love Carlos Wilde.

I’m ready to connect Carlos to others in Portugal, some talented younger artists and the entertainment entity I am building now. I m in similar place, I did sound for Muddy Waters Band at the first gig after Muddy passed away, when Drew Pennington(ex-Fabulous Thunderbirds, Nightcrawlers(w/SRV)), Jesse “Guitar” Taylor(Joe Ely Band) and Steve Keeton(Joe Ely Band)opened. I grew up in the Lubbock and Austin scenes and worked with two ex-Ohio Players (and still do). I am not in a place of licensing and producing my music through others and building my own version of the “Brill Building” and this article solidifies my desire to ask Carlos to join me and build our own stable of talent, while also bringing several seasoned veterans in as well, similar to the legendary “Wrecking Crew”. A fascinating article that brings back some very good memories like Los Bravos! I can’t be sure when or where I first met Carlos Wilde in the world of digital music online, but I think it was in the days when mp3.com was the place to hang out and strut our stuff musically. It is a testimony to Carlos’s ample talents as a singer-songwriter and musician that he has come so far in this crazy music business, and I was very gald to read about him here.
This is a wonderful article and I read it with great interest. All the links were nicely brought together to introduce us to Carlos Wilde. I came across Carlos in Reverbnation some 6 months ago. I was immediately struck at how his music crossed all genres and really should only need one label “Good “Music”. I was not aware of his history in such depth so that was fascinating to read.
We live In a music world where pretenders are worshiped as stars. Where they have to be dubbed and can’t carry a live Performance. I definitely would love to to see an article I’m Carlos Wilde. Honestly believe he would be an interesting article to read about his life his music how intelligent the man is. Carlos is an excellent songwriter.
These comments exemplify what I have found in Carlos Wilde’s music, yet still with all of these comments it still doesn’t truly portray how magnificently versatile Carlos is with his musical instrument and singing abilities. Carlos, a musical extroadinaire whom I promote daily on BigTime Radio, has skills that elude even the mosts experienced musicians. Not only does Carlos not hide himself away behind curtains (thinking of OZ) to try and let people discover his music alone, he daily submits to his fans and provides appreciation for their love of his music while others are too busy to care.
When a friend of Carlos, Greg Fritsch, told me about Carlos’ music I thougt to myself, “Oh another Enrique” but I was well ignorant as Carlos is much bigger and better than my asummptions. I cannot tell you how much I appreciated him, his music, his songs and the support he receives from his fans and followers. A commanding musician (experience and style) with a humble “heart of gold”! Keep making us love your music Carlos.
I’ve been a fan of Carlos for quite some time now , and what an amazing talent he is ..his writing excites me …his songs are so catchy and some great party dance tracks among his collection 🙂
I have not known Carlos Wilde that long but his versatility as a musician and song writer allows his songs the ability to cross into different genre’s which is really rare. The art of strong story telling weaving in and out of melodic cord structure’s allows a clear lyrical painting with no clutter. Carlos has grown over the last months and he is not afraid to push the musical boundaries with each song to create a unique signature that is truly brilliant and is definitely done his way.
I ran across Carlos about a year ago on Reverb Nation and was immediately taken by his ability at creating amazing original tunes equally strong both lyrically and melodically, with infectious guitar hooks and solid vocal performances.There is an inherent honesty to his music that’s so refreshing to hear.
I found myself fascinated by this well written article on the multi-tatalented, Portuguese musician, Carlos WIlde. It’s a fascinating piece profiling the history and development of a peerless musician. His determination to blend a love of music and performing while pursuing a demanding career career path highlights his determination and courage. Some of the most talented musicians remain virtually unknown, but something tells me Carlos will work his way through the media mist and assume his rightful place in front of an international audience. From my own perspective, I believe the self-effacing modesty of this fine performer deserves no less.

I was immediately enthralled with the wonderful musical style of my now, good friend- Carlos Wilde. I love his way of telling a story, and the cool rhythmic way his words ebb and flow ( a bit contrapuntally) with the music- very well executed! I was always an admirer of his music. I wish him much success in any and all aspects of the music business.
I have considered Carlos a phenomenal musician, artist and brilliant song writer from the first time I heard him. After reading this informative article, I am all the more impressed. Carlos Wilde is a hard working musician dedicated to his craft. I have recently become acquainted with his stimulating music and find it very refreshing to hear something so original. He can blend funk soul and rock together and then overlay the whole thing with some witty clever lyric. I would say he is a talented songwriter and musician deserving to be recognized. Tunes like ‘Rok Ma Wurld and ‘She Smiles Like An Angel’are just a few of many fine examples of Carlos Wilde’s unique irresistible talent.

Eusebio ‘The Black Pearl’ brings back great memories of the 1966 Football World Cup held in England, as I’m sure you know, Roy. For non-soccer fans, Eusébio da Silva Ferreira was one of the greatest players ever, for Portugal and Benfica. You couldn’t give Carlos a greater compliment.
Indeed I did watch it, Carlos. It was the World Cup semi-final and a riveting game. Bobby Charlton scored twice for England and
Eusebio (who else) got one back with a penalty for Portugal. England went on to defeat West Germany 4-2 in the final. I did a somersault and opened up a wound I had on my ankle after coming off a motor bike. Two weeks later I was in Alassio, Italy, playing table football against Italians. Happy days.

Being from Downunder, I heard of Carlos through some of our mutual friends on FB. His music is so pure, with beautiful clear lyrics, great melodies and a sound that is both enjoyable and lasting. I agree with Mr. Paul Merry, in putting Carlos up there with the other greats from the Iberian Peninsula and with the “Wilde”” greats, especially Marty and Kim. Fantastic Rockers and although not related he has the genes of the name.
I first came across Carlos when I joined what was then a very popular forum for independent artists back towards the beginning of this millennium! He was touting his first two big hits back in those days, “Staring at the Dark” and “Dreams” and I was knocked out on my first listen. I’ve been a fan since then. Great article! I’ve been a fan of Carlos Wilde for over a year now, connecting with the kind-hearted and compassionate rocker on Twitter. Not only is he a nice guy, but he’s also a gifted singer-songwriter and musician. The first time I listened to a selection of his songs, it was vaguely reminiscent of blues rocker Rober Cray…with a little twang. I am so proud of Carlos,I have been listening to his music since the beginning of Indie music, when we discovered each other at Indiehangout, a place where musicians gathered, chatted and listened to some of the best music ever created. At the infancy of internet radio, as a DJ, I had the pleasure to playing his music, and he will tell you my favourite, “This side of paradise” a classic blues song that blew me away. Sometimes it takes a long time to be discovered and appreciated in the Indie world, there are just too many of us, and we get lost, I am so glad for this article, no one deserved it better. Carlos is amazing and after this review, I feel he’s even more amazing. I’m ready to connect Carlos to others in Portugal, some talented younger artists and the entertainment entity I am building now. I m in similar place, I did sound for Muddy Waters Band at the first gig after Muddy passed away, when Drew Pennington(ex-Fabulous Thunderbirds, Nightcrawlers(w/SRV)), Jesse “Guitar” Taylor(Joe Ely Band) and Steve Keeton(Joe Ely Band)opened. I grew up in the Lubbock and Austin scenes and worked with two ex-Ohio Players (and still do). I am not in a place of licensing and producing my music through others and building my own version of the “Brill Building” and this article solidifies my desire to ask Carlos to join me and build our own stable of talent, while also bringing several seasoned veterans in as well, similar to the legendary “Wrecking Crew”. This is a wonderful article and I read it with great interest. All the links were nicely brought together to introduce us to Carlos Wilde. I came across Carlos in Reverbnation some 6 months ago. I was immediately struck at how his music crossed all genres and really should only need one label “Good “Music”. I was not aware of his history in such depth so that was fascinating to read.
We live In a music world where pretenders are worshiped as stars. Where they have to be dubbed and can’t carry a live Performance. To see this article on Carlos Wilde a real musician a real Singer Songwriter a real Performer and a real talent is superb. Let’s hope it helps him make his mark. Great writing Mr Paul Merry.

These comments exemplify what I have found in Carlos Wilde’s music, yet still with all of these comments it still doesn’t truly portray how magnificently versatile Carlos is with his musical instrument and singing abilities. Carlos, a musical extroadinaire whom I promote daily on BigTime Radio, has skills that elude even the mosts experienced musicians. Not only does Carlos not hide himself away behind curtains (thinking of OZ) to try and let people discover his music alone, he daily submits to his fans and provides appreciation for their love of his music while others are too busy to care.
When a friend of Carlos, Greg Fritsch, told me about Carlos’ music I thougt to myself, “Oh another Enrique” but I was well ignorant as Carlos is much bigger and better than my asummptions. I cannot tell you how much I appreciated him, his music, his songs and the support he receives from his fans and followers. A commanding musician (experience and style) with a humble “heart of gold”! Keep making us love your music Carlos.

I have not known Carlos Wilde that long but his versatility as a musician and song writer allows his songs the ability to cross into different genre’s which is really rare. The art of strong story telling weaving in and out of melodic cord structure’s allows a clear lyrical painting with no clutter. Carlos has grown over the last months and he is not afraid to push the musical boundaries with each song to create a unique signature that is truly brilliant and is definitely done his way.

I found myself fascinated by this well written article on the multi-tatalented, Portuguese musician, Carlos WIlde. It’s a fascinating piece profiling the history and development of a peerless musician. His determination to blend a love of music and performing while pursuing a demanding career career path highlights his determination and courage. Some of the most talented musicians remain virtually unknown, but something tells me Carlos will work his way through the media mist and assume his rightful place in front of an international audience. This has been a most interesting read Paul. I have known Carlos for a few years now and I consider him to be a most impressive songwriter, musician and performer. It’s no surprise to learn that on his Reverbnation site, he has acquired over 26000 fans who between them have played his songs over 122,000 times which is phenomenal! There is much to enjoy about his music that is built on feel good hooks, infectious chord progressions and well written lyrics. Carlos Wilde is a hard working musician dedicated to his craft. I have recently become acquainted with his stimulating music and find it very refreshing to hear something so original. He can blend funk soul and rock together and then overlay the whole thing with some witty clever lyric. I would say he is a talented songwriter and musician deserving to be recognized. Indeed I did watch it, Carlos. It was the World Cup semi-final and a riveting game. Bobby Charlton scored twice for England and
Eusebio (who else) got one back with a penalty for Portugal. England went on to defeat West Germany 4-2 in the final. I did a somersault and opened up a wound I had on my ankle after coming off a motor bike. Two weeks later I was in Alassio, Italy, playing table football against Italians. Happy days.

Being from Downunder, I heard of Carlos through some of our mutual friends on FB. His music is so pure, with beautiful clear lyrics, great melodies and a sound that is both enjoyable and lasting. I agree with Mr. Paul Merry, in putting Carlos up there with the other greats from the Iberian Peninsula and with the “Wilde”” greats, especially Marty and Kim. Fantastic Rockers and although not related he has the genes of the name.
